Uruguay receives two scanners and will use them in the port of Montevideo to reinforce merchandise control

-

The National Customs Directorate reported that two scanners arrived on Friday (21.06.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX) that will be used in the port of Montevideo to reinforce the control of merchandise, by safely inspecting the 80% of containers.

The arrival at the port was attended by the Minister and Undersecretary of Economy, Azucena Arbeleche and Alejandro Irastorza, respectively; the Minister of Transport, José Luis Falero; the president of the ANP, Juan Curbelo and the National Director of Customs, Jaime Borgiani.

Providing security is one of the main functions of the State. In this regard, "the equipment will provide the Non-Intrusive X-Ray Inspection service to control exports, imports and transits," according to the Customs Office.

In Borgiani's words: "It is the most modern thing in the world." These are two trucks equipped with an arm that scans the containers as they drive along the port esplanade and a computer center that transmits the images to the command center. In addition, they have their own generator that allows them to operate autonomously and a closed cabin that provides safety for the driver.

In 2023, the tender for this equipment was awarded to the company S2 Global INC, which will also provide operation and maintenance services, image interpretation software and training to Customs personnel.

"For the correct implementation of this service, which will operate 24 hours a day, it was necessary to increase staff," Borgiani added.

Use of technology and security

Arbeleche also stressed the use of technology and high-performance instruments. He said that “international trade increasingly requires a modern, agile customs office with other parameters. This allows us to take an important step in building a modern customs office.” He stressed that in terms of public security, this measure allows the government to deepen its actions “to combat drug trafficking.”

To this end, "the two teams will be permanently installed at the northern entrance to the port of Montevideo, while a third team - whose arrival is expected in the coming weeks - will provide services at different points in the territory," he said.
