Former Uruguayan ambassador to Spain Francisco Bustillo took office this Monday (06.07.2020) as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, replacing Ernesto Talvi, the presidency of the eastern country reported.

According to the statement, The leader will begin working in person on July 13, after completing a quarantine period. Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, stressed that there is a clear guideline from President Lacalle Pou in terms of foreign and trade policy.

"The signature of a document was missing, which is formal and in person, which was done with the Government notary, with all the corresponding health precautions.", Delgado said at a press conference after the formalization ceremony. He added that the new Minister of Foreign Affairs will hold several meetings with the President of the Republic, via video call, due to the quarantine that he will carry out starting today. 
 
Delgado said that The Government will continue with the foreign policy voted for by the citizens and defined in a timely manner with guidelines established in the common program agreed with the coalition. "Each foreign minister will put the necessary emphasis on it, but, in terms of foreign and trade policy, there is already a clear line from the President of the Republic," he said.
 
The Secretary of the Presidency considered it a historic event that Uruguay assumed the pro tempore presidency of Mercosur at the same time that German Chancellor Angela Merkel took charge of the European Union. “(At the meeting with the presidents of Mercosur,) Lacalle Pou took the opportunity to define some priorities in international politics, to talk about a 'mercorrealism' and finish what was started”, he said, referring to the Mercosur-European Union agreement.
 
The now foreign minister Francisco Bustillo arrived in the country on the morning of Sunday the 5th, from Spain, the country in which he served as Uruguay's ambassador. In a conversation with the media, he reported that within five days a new COVID-19 test will be carried out, after the swab test carried out on Thursday the 2nd in Spain, the result of which was negative. He added that his objective is to begin working in person on Monday, July 13th at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
 
"These days will help me to organize my ideas, work, call the president and put myself at the service of Luis Lacalle Pou.", said the diplomat, who appreciated the gesture of the Uruguayans who congratulated him and conveyed their wishes for success.
