Uruguay closes its borders, except for cargo transportation

-

Following the increase in Covid-19 cases, the Government of Uruguay closed all its air, sea and land borders as of today (21.12.2020/10/2021) until January XNUMX, XNUMX, with exceptions for cargo transportation and humanitarian aid.

This was explained at a press conference by the Ministers of Defense, Javier García, and Interior, Jorge Larrañaga, who agreed in calling on the population of that country to abide by the rules and avoid crowds to ensure people's health.

García explained that starting Monday, more than 500 members of the Army and Navy will be deployed in all border areas with Argentina and Brazil, with 25 checkpoints where entry will be permitted for the exceptions of cargo transportation and humanitarian aid.

"We want to say that no one would happily adopt this provision, under any circumstances. But they are determined because very important and, I would say, sacred rights, such as the right to life and health, must be preserved," he said.

He added that in the border with BrazilIn particular, there is the "phenomenon" of "binational life", in which Uruguayan citizens move to Brazil to work and vice versa, so he pointed out that in these cases, identity documents will be requested as a verification measure and migratory movements will be reviewed.

We are going to be very strict with the enforcement of the law, so both the 25 checkpoints around the country and the bridges will be closed, and at the same time we remind you that private flights and all means of land and sea transport are prohibited," he said.

Regarding the limitation of meetings and gatherings of people, Larrañaga explained that the inspections will be carried out by the Departmental Emergency Coordination Centers that will be constituted by the Ministries of the Interior and Defense, and the Attorney General's Office, presided over by the 19 mayors of the country.

The authorities reiterated that, starting on Monday 21, borders will be closed and bridges will be fenced, with exceptions for the transport of cargo and humanitarian aid. Private flights are prohibited, as well as the arrival of vessels from other countries, for example, Argentina, until January 10.
