Agreement signed to promote digital commerce in Latin America

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Latin American Internet Association (ALAI) signed an agreement on Friday (6.4.2018) in Montevideo to promote intraregional trade via the Internet, of which Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay will be the first beneficiaries, official sources reported.

The signed agreement launched the "Digital Trade Promotion Program for South America"The objective of this initiative is to promote the creation of tools that will increase intraregional trade," the IDB said in a statement.

The people in charge of signing this agreement were the IDB representative in Uruguay, Morgan Doyle, and the executive director of ALAI, Gonzalo Navarro.

According to the details of the international organization's document, The agreement is supported by $600.000 from the IDB and another $500.000 from ALAI to launch the program.

It also details that Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay "will be the first countries who will participate in the program."

For Doyle, this program will allow "the promotion of digital commerce," a sector that "offers enormous potential for the region, where there are leading cutting-edge companies and significant challenges persist in democratizing access," the IDB document states.

Within the framework of this agreement, the iInstitutions will carry out a series of actions, such as research work, design of public policies and training in public organizations, among others.

"Some of the recommendations are expected to be implemented through pilot projects that can be replicated and scaled up in other countries in the region," the statement added.

ALAI's executive director, for his part, noted that the launch of this agreement "comes to ratify, in the best way, the good understanding that exists between the platform sector in Latin America and the Caribbean and the IDB."

"We are confident that its results will be a very important contribution to the future of our countries and we are extremely satisfied with the trust that has been placed in us," said Navarro.
