Authorities of the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) received, this Tuesday (02.04.2024/XNUMX/XNUMX), the first shipment of cellulose arriving at the port of Montevideo by rail from the UPM plant 2, Located in the town of Pueblo Centenario, in the department of Durazno, the locomotive transported some 832 tons of cellulose distributed in 13 wagons.
El Minister of Transport and Public Works, José Luis Falero, received the first shipment of cellulose at the new railway terminal in Montevideo. Falero was accompanied by the Secretary of the Presidency, Rodrigo Ferrés, and the Ministers of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche; of the Environment, Robert Bouvier, and of National Defense, Armando Castaingdebat.
The locomotive arrived and transported some 832 tons of cellulose distributed in 13 wagons from the UPM 2 plant to the new terminal in the capital specialized in the product. The central transfer was coordinated by the Railway Traffic Control Center (CCTF) of the aforementioned station.
“Today an initial test of partial loads of cellulose entering the port of Montevideo was carried out,” Falero specified. In this regard, he explained that the operation of this means of transport must be carried out gradually to avoid risks.
He stressed that inter-institutional involvement made it possible to achieve multimodal transport and that this will play a fundamental role in the country's development policy. "There is a Government committed to the productive sectors to achieve a more competitive Uruguay," he said.
He also announced that on April 16, the first full load of cellulose with 25 wagons will be received in the town of Cardal, Florida department.
The new state-of-the-art railway network will initially operate at 50% capacity, under the responsibility of UPM, the minister said. In this sense, there is an equivalent percentage available for other companies or industries in the country to use this modality. Falero said that the return of the train will keep Uruguay as a reference country in the world and at the forefront in the region.
The Central Railway project consisted of the construction and maintenance of railway tracks, over a 264-kilometre stretch, between the port of Montevideo and the city of Paso de los Toros, which allows the circulation of cargo convoys with 22,5 tonnes of load per axle, which would result in the transport of up to 4 million tonnes per year.
The event was also attended by the Undersecretary of the MTOP, Juan José Olaizola; the President and Vice President of the National Port Administration (ANP), Juan Curbelo and Daniel Loureiro, respectively, and other national and departmental authorities.
