In response to the need to further promote customs digitalization and modernization, the World Customs Organization (WCO) launched the “Smart Customs Project” in the Americas and the Caribbean, through the Regional Workshop on Disruptive Technologies.
The event took place from March 18 to 22, 2024, in Lima, Peru, the WCO said in a statement.
The opening ceremony was headed by the brand new Deputy National Superintendent of Customs of Peru (SUNAT) in charge of the Vice Presidency of the WCO for the Region of the Americas and the Caribbean, Fernando Nunez Jauregui, He stressed “the critical role of innovation in navigating the changing complexities of our global landscape.” He also highlighted “the transformative potential of disruptive technologies to usher in a smarter approach that helps facilitate and safeguard global supply chains.”
Throughout the workshop, sharing was encouraged. insights on the progress made by administrations in the adoption of disruptive technologies. In this way, attendees delved into topics related to these developments; in detail: blockchain, data analysis, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), drones, geospatial location and the Internet of Things. They explored how these technologies are reshaping the international trade landscape and exchanged ideas on strategies to take advantage of them and improve the efficiency, security and transparency of customs processes.
According to the WCO, the regional workshop provided a platform for participants to exchange their experiences, ideas on digital transformation strategies and lessons from innovation projects. It also helped foster links between customs.
There were interactive sessions and group exercises that facilitated discussions on the status and challenges of technology adoption in the region, emphasizing the importance of “responsible principles” and “change management” perspectives. Internal stakeholder engagement and integration of user needs emerged as central themes, along with a commitment to leverage existing research and academic partnerships.
After that, the new National Superintendent of Customs of Peru (SUNAT)), Gerardo Arturo Lopez Gonzalez, He expressed his gratitude for the fruitful results of the workshop. He stressed the importance of promoting “digital customs initiatives” as well as fostering “human talent” to improve Customs performance through technological advances, emphasizing the fundamental role of “both” aspects in achieving smart control.
The meeting was attended by more than 40 participants from 20 WCO member administrations, speakers from the private sector, academia and other international organizations.
“Future interactions will guide the selection of technologies on which the Project will focus, ensuring alignment with Members’ needs and technological readiness,” according to data provided by the event.
It should be noted that China Customs has pledged to financially support this WCO Project to benefit members more broadly.
