The Paraguayan Truck Drivers Union (UCP) is protesting against the entry into the country of "bitren" type vehicles (with two trailers attached) from Brazil, considering them "illegal competition," local press reports.
Local truckers warn that their work will be at a disadvantage because Brazilian trucks have a greater capacity to transport grain.
Around 30 trucks block access to the main roads in Asunción, according to local newspaper ABC Color.
Police said they are considering stopping the convoy of trucks from reaching the capital's downtown area.
The Ministry of Public Works and Communications authorized the entry of bitren trucks into Paraguay, in principle, for the Transport of one million tons of grain from Brazil, according to the newspaper La Nación.
The ministry said that the cargo will be transported in equal parts by Brazilian and Paraguayan truck drivers.
However, the general coordinator of the UCP, David Ramos, told ABC Cardinal radio that with the entry of the double-trailers "2.600.000 self-employed owners and drivers would be left without work"because they will not be able to compete against these types of vehicles in the future.
