NAFTA negotiations to continue in February in Mexico

-

The sixth round of renegotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) concluded with progress on the chapter on corruption and other issues, and talks will continue at the end of February in Mexico, said Mexican chief negotiator Ildefonso Guajardo in Montreal, Canada.

"For the next round we still have challenges to overcome, but the progress achieved so far puts us on the right path to conclude this process (…). We will be happy to welcome you at the end of February for the seventh round of negotiations in Mexico City," said Guajardo, in a message to the media, together with the US negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, and the Canadian host Chrystia Freeland.

Guajardo, head of Mexico's Ministry of Economy, said that the three countries have made progress "especially in chapters to modernize the treaty; the anti-corruption chapter was closed, very important issues beyond what has been done previously."

Other issues mentioned by the Mexican chief negotiator were telecommunications, trade and health measures.

Lighthizer said that "some progress has been made, we have concluded a chapter on corruption and made progress in some other areas."

These results have allayed fears of an abrupt exit from Donald Trump's government. Trump described NAFTA as the "worst treaty" ever signed by the United States, citing, among other reasons, his country's trade deficit with its partners.
