The governments of Paraguay and Brazil are receiving European border management experts from the EUROFRONT programme from Monday 26 July to 2 August, the Paraguayan Foreign Ministry announced.
El EUROFRONT project is funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Italian-Latin American Organization (IILA) and the International Foundation for Ibero-America for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP).
The purpose of the meetings is part of the initiative to improve security and development in Latin America by strengthening cooperation between authorities and security forces in seven partner countries: Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia.
With this First technical visit to Paraguay and Brazil, the European delegation will encourage dialogue between the authorities involved in the management of border posts, particularly those of the Triple Border, thus facilitating the exchange of information between national authorities. To date, these activities have had to be carried out virtually due to the restrictions caused by Covid-19.
La Delegation began the tour in Asunción (Paraguay) where the EUROFRONT team will hold meetings with the National Anti-Drug Secretariat, the Ministry of the Interior, the National Directorate of Migration, the National Police and the National Directorate of Customs. The mission will then travel to Ciudad del Este to learn about the work at the border post, in collaboration with the National Directorate of Migration and the National Police.
El The tour will continue across the Friendship Bridge, in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, where meetings will be held with the Federal Police, the Brazilian Intelligence Agency and the Secretariat for Integrated Operations. They will visit the Integrated Center for Border Operations to learn in detail about the operation of the Tripartite Command and the National Program for Border and Currency Security (VIGIA). The mission will end in Brasilia with institutional meetings at the Ministry of the Interior.
EUROFRONT's Border Expert, José Antonio Cambronero Sicilia, assigned specifically to the Triple Border between Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, will evaluate the performance of the border posts on the ground, paying attention to the challenges and needs of the three countries. After the analysis, a preliminary diagnosis will be made that will serve as a basis for EUROFRONT to define the priority activities in the different areas of intervention of the program: regulations, operations, training and technological capacity building at border posts.
