WCO and EU sign agreement to support Uruguay in general aviation

-

The World Customs Organization (WCO) and the European Union (EU) are strengthening their support for Uruguay to fight organized crime and ensure the transport of goods and people using general aviation, within the framework of the Colibrí project.

The authorities of the EU and Uruguay met on Tuesday (15.09.2020) in Montevideo to sign a memorandum of understanding in which they agree to cooperate in the tasks of surveillance and control of general aviation, indicated the National Directorate of Customs (DNA).

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Head of Mission of the EU Delegation, Tomas Pospisil, the Director of Customs, Jaime Borgiani, and the Director of the State Intelligence Secretariat, Álvaro Garcé.

WCO authorities highlighted Uruguay's international cooperation efforts to improve controls in general aviation.

“Today marks an important milestone for those involved in the implementation of COLIBRI and for the international law enforcement community,” said Ricardo Treviño Chapa, Deputy Secretary of the WCO.

For his part, the Director of Customs, Jaime Borgiani, said: "It is a pleasure for the DNA to sign this memorandum with the European Union and the WCO. We understand that this project improves the work of everyone, strengthening the capacities of officials of State agencies."

It is important to note that the World Customs Organization and the European Union have joined forces to address the challenge posed by organized crime in Latin America and the Caribbean, and West and Central Africa.

The Colibrí project, implemented under the EU-funded Cocaine Route Programme, specifically targets general aviation, a vector that refers to civil aviation operations for other than commercial transport.
