Government authorities from Guatemala and the United States signed a memorandum of inter-institutional cooperation on Monday (30.11.2020/XNUMX/XNUMX), taking a step toward facilitating trade between the two countries, according to the Superintendency of Tax Administration (SAT) of the Central American country.

It follows from the statement that "the agreement signed between the SAT and the Customs and Border Control Office (CBP) will enable the implementation of a timely and accurate information exchange program, which will allow Customs Administrations to analyze risks on a more effective basis, with best practices and technical assistance in customs matters, which will strengthen cooperation between both customs authorities with a view to facilitating trade.”

“The signature fits into the Pillar 1 of the World Customs Organization's SAFE Regulatory Framework, representing cooperation between customs, which join forces to jointly address the challenges posed by international trade," he explains.

Additionally, it is indicated that "the initiative aims to improve the mechanisms for detection, investigation and prosecution of cases that promote illegal activities in customs matters and the control of cross-border criminal structures, among other measures and actions to promote voluntary compliance and facilitate safe actors and operators."

The information states: “This action is part of the Comprehensive Customs Modernization which allows strengthening customs risk management and analysis, providing benefits to foreign trade through improved security in the logistics chain, strengthening transparency, facilitation and streamlining of international trade with one of the main trading partners.”

The signing of the memorandum took place virtually through the social network Facebook, and was attended by Guatemala's Superintendent of SAT, Marco Livio Díaz, and Customs Superintendent Werner Ovalle. The United States was represented by Ambassador William W. Popp, Customs Attaché Manuel Levari, and Executive Assistant Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, William A. Ferrara, among others.
