President Alberto Fernández and the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, held their first bilateral meeting this morning (30.11.2020), via videoconference, after the election in October last year.

This Monday (30.11.2020) the meeting took place at the Friendship Day between Brazil and Argentina, which has been held on the same date for 35 years, since the first meeting in 1985 between the then presidents José Sarney and Raúl Afonsín, in Foz do Iguazú. The occasion is seen as the initial milestone of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).

Also present at the meeting were the foreign ministers of Argentina, Felipe Solá, and Brazil, Ernesto Araújo. After the virtual meeting between the representatives, Sarney participated in a ceremony to mark the date.

In the note released after the meeting, the Casa Rosada said that the Argentine president gave a push to Mercosur and defended during the meeting "leave differences in the past and face the future with the tools that work for the good of all«.

Fernández highlighted the collaboration between the two countries in the areas of security and defense, which he said has advanced. The Argentine president also mentioned the need for cooperation in the environmental area and mentioned opportunities in the natural gas sector.

According to the note, Bolsonaro also highlighted at the meeting the good integration between the countries' Armed Forces, whether in the development of the war industry or in the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime.
