Guatemala is the first country in Latin America to have a National Maritime Protection Strategy

Within the framework of the XVII Port and Maritime Congress, the National Maritime Protection Strategy from Guatemala, an instrument where all institutions with responsibility in the area converge and, jointly, identify and analyze threats from different perspectives.

Guatemala thus becomes the first country in Latin America to implement this instrument, according to the National Port Commission.

The Guatemalan State entity explained that this “significant milestone” is the result of international technical cooperation to contribute to the fight against organized crime, such as drug trafficking, illegal fishing, piracy and other actions that affect the security of cargo and maritime traffic.

The National Maritime Protection Strategy of Guatemala has been developed with the collaboration of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the Organization of American States (CICTE-OAS).

Nineteen governmental and non-governmental institutions also contributed, providing valuable information.

In view of this, the National Port Commission assures that the instrument will not only strengthen the maritime protection of Guatemala, but will also contribute to stability and prosperity in the region.

The initiative, a "pioneer in Latin America," thus serves as a model for other countries seeking to improve their maritime protection capabilities, the statement said.
