Customs detains shipment to Hong Kong of cocaine laced in teddy bears

The General Directorate of Customs (DGA) announced through a statement the detention of the shipment to Hong Kong of a package with two teddy bears impregnated with liquid cocaine.

This operation took place at the Monte Grande Postal Center, located in the province of Buenos Aires.

The DGA explained that a risk matrix prepared by the agency based on previous records caused the shipment of a box to attract the attention of customs personnel and they suspected that it could contain drugs.

To do this, Customs used a non-intrusive method of control: the customs scannerThe images revealed by the team caught their attention and put them on alert; inside there was something that was not usual. 

Also present at the operation was a customs binomial: the K9 dog and his handler. The animal inspected the merchandise and displayed behavior consistent with the presence of narcotics and/or foreign currency.

Upon hearing these signs, the package was opened; the box contained two teddy bears, football shirts and cases with false eyelashes. The two toys They weighed more than usual.

The agents focused their attention on the two bears and discovered that inside them there was a filling of wadding and cotton with an unusual consistency; they were sure there was drugs. 

When they made the narcotest They were able to confirm their suspicions: there was liquid cocaine impregnated in the cotton. In total, there were 648 grams of this substance that they were trying to send to Hong Kong.

In Argentina the kilo of cocaine can be sold for USD 15.000, but in Hong Kong The price grows substantially and the value for the same amount reaches $170.000. Therefore, the substance shipped could be sold for USD 102.000 in the destination country.

Authorities said the people named in the mail item are under investigation.
