In 2017, the National Service for Food Safety and Quality (Senasa) inspected exports of ornamental plants for 653 tons, an increase of 29 percent in volume compared to the 507 tons of 2016.
In Argentina, production is concentrated in the second and third belts of Greater Buenos Aires and the provinces of Corrientes, Misiones, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán.
According to data recorded by Senasa, in 2017, certified exports of palo borracho totaled 347 tons (315 tons in 2016) and its main destinations were China, 211 tons; Taiwan, 90 tons; and Georgia, 29 tons.
In addition, last year the state health agency recorded shipments of 29 tons of blueberry plants to Uruguay; 120 tons of ornamental palm plants; 111 tons of palm trees to Portugal; and 11 tons of Gingko biloba plants to Taiwan.
Senasa's phytosanitary controls contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of ornamental plants, making it possible to achieve the quality standards required in international markets while encouraging producers to use resources more efficiently and add value.
