La epidemic of the new coronavirus could cause losses of almost US$30.000 billion for airlines all over the world, and Of that amount, almost half would be borne by the Chinese market., estimated this Thursday (20.02.2020) the International Air Transport Association (there it is).

In total, losses could amount to US$29.300 billion globally.

The net decline in passenger numbers compared to 2019 could be 8,2% in 2020 in the Asia-Pacific region, the association estimates.

For the first time since the 2008/2009 financial crisis, air travel bookings around the world could decline, according to IATA.

"In that scenario, this would translate into a loss of revenue of US$27.800 billion in 2020 for carriers in the Asia-Pacific region," the statement said.

2020 "will be a very difficult year for airlines," warned IATA CEO Alexandre de Juniac.

Several airlines, including British Airways, Delta, Lufthansa, Air France and Air Canada, have cancelled flights to mainland China due to the health crisis. Air France-KLM estimates its losses between January and April to be in the range of US$150 to US$200 million.
