The meeting of Customs Directors of Latin America, Spain and Portugal concluded

The end of the XLI Meetingion of National Directors of Customs of Latin America, Spain and Portugal, aimed at exchanging experiences to facilitate global trade and combat fraud, according to information from the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration of Peru, the venue of the meeting that was held virtually from 29 to the 30 of April of 2021.

On first day of sessions, The Deputy Secretary General of the World Customs Organization, Ricardo Treviño, presented the BACUDA project, a data analysis system for customs that enables the detection of risks in international trade such as smuggling, undervaluation and illegal flow of goods.

It was also developed panel “Experiences in the use of new technologies. Customs risk management system”, based on the exploitation and crossing of information, analysis and data mining, where the Director of Customs, María Pilar Jurado Borrego, of the Tax Agency of Spain, while Gustavo Coutinho, from Brazil, highlighted the progressive implementation of an artificial intelligence tool to monitor the risk profiles of cargo in ports and airports in his country.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Customs Administration of HondurasJuan José Vides shared information on the experience of traceability in customs transit operations of goods in Central America, using the unique format (DUCA-T) that interoperates with the computer systems of the customs of the region.

On Second day of the event, inside the panel “Anti-corruption success stories”, the National Director of Customs of Uruguay, Jaime Borgiani gave a presentation on the significance of the “success story” of his country’s Customs in the fight against corruption.

The panel “Trade Facilitation and Customs Control in the COVID-19 context”, where Ingrid Magnolia Díaz Rincón, Director of Customs Management of Colombia, He spoke about the modernization of services and the biosanitary measures implemented to maintain foreign trade.

The participation of the Customs experience also took place. Cuba, which reduced in-person procedures, increased teleworking and used the Single Window for Foreign Trade.

Finally, the delegates of the XLI Meeting of Directors of Latin America, Spain and Portugal paid tribute to the customs workers who have been victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her final words, the Deputy National Superintendent of Customs, Marilú Llerena, reviewed the meetings held in Peru. She stressed that the exchange of information and joint work with law enforcement agencies and other Customs is essential to defeat criminal organizations. She also highlighted the well-deserved tribute to Customs workers, who guard the borders 24X7 on the front line and often far from their families. “Thank you for allowing foreign trade to flow quickly and safely,” she concluded.

The next meetings of the Customs of Latin America, Spain and Portugal will be held in 2022 in Honduras, while the Dominican Republic has committed to organizing the corresponding one in 2023.
