UN develops training in Global Container Control Program for officials in Iquique

-

Officials Customs, Armada, Carabineros y PDI participate in a workshop for the implementation of the Global Container Control Programme in Iquique. This is an initiative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Customs Organization (WCO) that seeks to strengthen structures and processes to minimize the illicit activities of transnational organized crime.

The inauguration of the Workshop was led by the Presidential Delegate of Tarapacá and Master of Research in Criminology, Daniel Quinteros Rojas, who highlighted that the Container Control Program is coordinated in Chile by the Ministry of the Interior and is part of the National Plan Against Organized Crime promoted by the Government. He also highlighted the inter-agency work and the fact that smuggling is one of the priority crimes at a regional level, “given that our strategy is to pursue criminal markets and also strengthen initial investigations.”

El Regional Director of the Iquique Customs, Cristian Molina Silva, explained that this program has already been enabled in the port of San Antonio and now it will be the turn for the Iquique terminals. “The collaborative work and the coordinated management "What Customs can do with Directemar, Carabineros and PDI is very important, since it allows us to provide security to the logistics chain and to our citizens. We must remember that 90% of international trade is carried out through containers and there are criminal organizations that seek to contaminate them with drugs and other illicit goods."

The training, which will last all week, is being conducted by WCO and UNODC monitors, Uruguayan Cesar Schiaffino Davison and the Panamanian Jahir Garay Muñoz, together with the Coordinator of the Global Container Program for the Southern Cone, the Argentine Nicolas Benza
