Argentina leads the export of organic pears and apples to the European Union (EU), according to a report recently published by the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) of the European Commission.
Our country is positioned as the main exporter to the EU in the fresh fruit category – mainly pears and apples – with shipments of more than 30 thousand tons, representing 20,7% of that market.
The “organic” status of a product is a quality attribute based on a lower use of agricultural inputs in the production of foods of animal and plant origin, which is also more friendly to the environment and the preservation of natural resources.
In this regard, the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) has regulations and a control system that is equivalent to international requirements and recognized by the international community, whose actions involve, among others, enabling and auditing certifying entities for the control of operators – who produce, process and market organic products –, providing transparency when certifying exports.
The global market for organic products is constantly growing, with the United States being the largest buyer with 47% of the total, followed by the EU with 37%. Over the past 10 years, the European market for these products has doubled and in 2017 it increased by 11% compared to 2016.
Argentina is among the countries with the largest surface area – more than three million hectares – dedicated to this type of production for markets that demand certified organic products with international recognition.
