Argentina assumes G20 presidency

-

Argentina is in for a historic day when Germany takes over the presidency of the Group of 20 industrialized and emerging countries, said Argentine President Mauricio Macri, at the launch ceremony that places this South American nation as host of the summit to be held in December 2018.

"It is a historic day for Argentines because we are assuming the presidency of the G20, the most relevant forum of global economic governance.", said Macri during the event held on Thursday (30.11.2017) in Buenos Aires.

The president stressed that his administration will carry out arduous work over the next year that "will culminate in a summit that will be held for the first time in Latin America."

Before a large audience that included his entire cabinet and provincial governors and officials, Macri boasted of placing Argentina "in a relevant place in the world where we inspire confidence".

After listening to a recorded message from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose country precedes Argentina in the G-20 presidency, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the president said that the G20 will focus on "the aspirations and concerns of this developing region, which is eager for new opportunities."

"Our view from the South in the 21st century can be a bridge across diversity," said the president.

The forum's goal will also be one of Macri's objectives during his presidency: reducing poverty.

Thats why he The motto of the forum will be "Building consensus for equitable and sustainable development", the head of state announced.

According to Macri, the G20 in 2008 was "very effective" because it "prevented an international depression and strengthened the financial architecture."

"Growth is currently strong but has not benefited everyone, and that has undermined the confidence of many in globalization," he said.

Three axes will mark the G20 agenda: the future of work, infrastructure development and a sustainable food future.

To do this, it will be necessary to encourage private investment, strengthen infrastructure, and ensure, in the case of Argentina, that it can feed 400 million people.

This South American country will formally assume the presidency of the G20 on December 1.
