Argentina updates rules for travelers on cash entry and exit

-

The RGeneral Resolution 5659/2025, published today (10.03.2025/XNUMX/XNUMX) by the Customs Revenue and Control Agency (ARCA), updates and unifies the regulations on the entry and exit of cash, bearer negotiable instruments and precious metal coins when they are transported as part of the luggage or belongings of travelers and crew.

According to this resolution, both the luggage of travelers and the crew's belongings (mainly air and sea) must be declared to Customs if they contain values greater than USD 10.000 in cash, bearer negotiable instruments or precious metals. The measure aims to improve control over the movement of these values in international traffic, ensuring the obtaining of information in real time.

The regulation is aligned with the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which establishes global standards for the prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing. In addition, the resolution replaces General Resolutions Nos. 2.704 and 2.705 of 2009 y maintains the obligation to declare values greater than 10.000 dollars, with the corresponding information sent to the Financial Information Unit (UIF). Also complies with Decree No. 1.570/2001, which regulates restrictions on the export of banknotes and precious metals.

Amongst the most important aspects resolved by the ARCA, the following stand out:

  • Travelers and crew members entering to Argentina with cash, bearer negotiable instruments or precious metals with a value equal to or greater than USD 10.000 must declare it to Customs using the form OM 2249-A.
  • For leaving the country, you are allowed to carry up to USD 10.000 without declaration. If the amount exceeds this limit, the withdrawal must be made through authorized financial institutions or declared with the form OM 2250-B in case of national currency.
  • The established amounts are per person and are reduced to 50% for under 16 years not emancipated.
  • The customs service will record the declared data for each traveler or crew member in the Entry and Exit of Values System. To do so, the procedure available on the "Travelers" microsite of the ARCA website must be followed (https://www.arca.gob.ar).
  • The recorded information will be provided by the ARCA to the UIF, that is, to the Financial Information Unit.

General Resolution 5659/2025, published today, March 10, will come into force effective March 24, in accordance with the provisions of the ARCA, this being the tenth business day after its publication.
