Starting in May, tourists visiting Uruguay will no longer receive a full refund of the Value Added Tax (VAT), the government of Tabaré Vázquez announced today.
Currently, foreign tourists receive a refund of all VAT on their purchases in Uruguay, which is 22%. Last October, the Uruguayan government had announced that it would not renew the benefit for foreign tourists.
The measure includes the Purchases paid with credit and debit cards and electronic transfers and covers catering services, parties and events, car rentals and other services and goods.
Thus, Starting May 1, the discount will be 9%, announced the Minister of Tourism, Liliam Kechichian. Uruguay receives tourists from all over the world, but mainly from Argentina and Brazil.
