June sessions of the WCO Policy Commission and Council have begun

-

The World Customs Organization (WCO) began this Monday (21.06.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX) the development of the 84th session of the General Policy Committee and the 138th regular session of the Council of the Organization to advance general practical policy issues relevant to the WCO Strategic Plan.

The meeting is held in virtual format under the presidency of Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, head of Bahrain Customs (a country that encompasses more than 30 islands in the Persian Gulf), who welcomed the delegates. The Secretary General of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya, expressed its appreciation and gratitude for the leadership and progress made by members to ensure that the WCO remains relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his speech, Werner Ovalle, Regional Vice President of the OMA, highlighted the flexibility and support provided by the Customs Community to the Americas and the Caribbean, which has allowed important achievements in the region.

During the three-day meeting, the Policy Commission will consider issues to be referred to the Council, the supreme body of the WCO, for a final decision on the work and activities agreed upon in the Organization.

These highest working bodies meet at least twice a year, but since 1966, the two annual sessions have been held at the same time, almost always in June; they generally last three days, according to the WCO Terms of Reference.
