The Port of Barcelona recorded a 30,2% growth in container traffic between January and August 2017.
Specifically, during the first eight months of the year a total of 1.945.647 million TEUs were moved, a measure equivalent to a 20-foot container, according to the port authority on Monday (18.09.2017). The figure places Barcelona as the European port with the greatest growth in this sector.
Although the increase in container transport is seen in all modalities, the greatest push is seen in transshipment cargo, which is unloaded to be re-shipped to its final destination, with an increase of 128,3%.
Also, the Port of Barcelona highlights the “good evolution” of international trade, which shows increases of 6,7% in imports and 5,4% in exports.
This is partly due to the reinforcement of the maritime offer since last July with five new lines, operated by MSC, which serve to strengthen the networks with strategic markets, such as “India, the United States, Canada or Brazil", the statement said.
In terms of total traffic, 40 million tonnes have passed through the port of Barcelona in the first eight months of the year, 21,3% more than during the same period in 2016. Added to this is the 16,2% increase in bulk liquids, such as natural gas (up 61,6%), petrol (21,2%), fuel (37,8%) and chemical products (13,2%).
Road traffic also increased by 6,5% compared to last year. Vehicle movements, with a total of 554.779 units transported, decreased by 8,7% compared to the previous year, although imports increased by 5,8%.
