Panama seeks to strengthen the technical and operational capabilities of customs personnel

La National Customs Administration (ANA) from Panama met virtually this Tuesday (09.08.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX) with the consultants of the Cybersecurity Program of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE/OAS)), and outlined some issues that could form part of the advice that this regional entity provides to countries in their efforts to Strengthen the capabilities of operational staff in cargo, container and ship security and inspection techniques.

According to the statement, the new meeting completes part of the agenda fulfilled by the Director General of ANA, Tayra Barsallo, during her recent trip to Washington DC, where the first coordinations with CICTE were established, thanks to the support of the permanent representative of Panama to the OAS, María Roquebert.
 
"Between the topics covered that could be taken into account for technical advice by specialists are:  Update of inspection protocols and manuals for cargo, containers and ships, assistance in the development of a regional training center, virtual introductory courses, conference of implementers in cargo and container security", the statement reads.
 
It should be emphasized that the CICTE/OAS project is intended to help member states build capacity to combat smuggling and trafficking of illicit goods by improving the knowledge and skills required to examine cargo and transports with practical training. To this end, “activities focus on the exchange of experiences, increasing the use of safe work procedures and personal protective equipment, reducing injuries and protecting capacity. They also help participating organizations collaborate and develop joint working methods to find solutions to shared challenges,” the statement said.

According to the Panamanian Customs, “To carry out these trainings, new meetings will be organized soon.".

On this occasion, the advisor of the superior office, Darío Sandoval, led the Customs team that was made up of the head of the Authorized Economic Operator, Eric Julio; the head of Risk Analysis, Alberto Ng; the advisor, Ivette Villalaz and the Director of Technology for Innovation and Technological Transformation, Mariela Castillo.
