WTO holds virtual forum on global supply chains

-

The World Trade Organization (WTO) will hold the Forum on Monday, March 21,“Reducing supply chain bottlenecks for a sustainable future.”

The body noted that since the start of the health crisis, WTO economies have been facing continued supply and demand pressures, congested ports, maritime transport bottlenecks, rising inflation, increasing freight rates and shortages that are disrupting global trade.

For this reason, participants will explore the role that the WTO can play in strengthening global supply chains and how partners from all regions and sectors can collaborate to make their construction more sustainable and inclusive, the organization said.

The event will be hosted by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, starting at 16 p.m. (Switzerland).

The first panel discussion on “Perspectives from large and small businesses” will feature Pedro Bakker, President and CEO of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development; Pamela Coke-Hamilton, Executive Director of the International Trade Centre; and John Denton, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Commerce.

This will be followed by a panel discussion on “Supply chain disruptions, impacts and responses” moderated by Alan Beattie, senior trade editor at the Financial Times.

This panel will be attended by Rubana Huq, Managing Director of the Mohammadi Group; Rodolphe Saadé, Director and CEO of the CMA CGM Group; Clemence Cheng, Managing Director for Europe of Hutchison Ports; and Kemvichet Long, Ambassador and incoming President of the Council for Trade in Services.

Also to be discussed on the panel on “Unlocking Solutions to Build Resilient and Inclusive Supply Chains” are Luz María de la Mora Sánchez, Undersecretary of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Economy of Mexico; Ryan Petersen, CEO of Flexport; Young Tae Kim, Secretary General of the International Transport Forum; Geetha Tharmaratnam, CEO and Founding Partner of Aequalitas Capital Partners; Penny Naas, President of UPS for International Public Affairs and Sustainability; and Usha Chandnee Dwarka-Canabady, Ambassador and incoming Chair, Committee on Trade and Development.
