Mexico and EU could soon close modernization of the FTA

Mexico and the European Union could outline in the coming weeks a possible closing of the negotiations of their Free Trade Agreement, reported this Tuesday (05.12.2017) the Ministry of Economy of Mexico.

At the conclusion of the sixth round of modernization of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Mexico (TLCUEM), which began on November 27 in Mexico City, the Mexican secretariat said in a statement that managed to make progress on all issues which are part of the negotiation.

The sixth round of negotiations also addressed issues of access to goods markets, rules of origin, trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, regulatory improvement, intellectual property, public procurement and state-owned enterprises, among many others.

"The modernization of the FTAEM constitutes a priority on Mexico's trade agenda, aimed at strengthening integration with existing trading partners and promoting the diversification of economic relations in the world," the ministry said in the text.

The working groups, which began discussions in June 2016, will continue working via videoconference this week and They will meet again on December 11 in Brussels, Belgium.

The aim is to outline the possible conclusion of negotiations during the meetings that the Mexican Secretary of Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo, and his counterpart, the European Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmström, will have in the week of December 18, he added.

The European Union is the second largest investor in Mexico after the United States, a country with which it is renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which is complemented by Canada.
