Inspectors from the Chilean National Customs Service detected and seized a total of 1.876 abortion pills at the Chacalluta border complex, which were illegally imported from Bolivia. The drugs were hidden in the cabin and engine filter of a truck with a Chilean license plate that was returning to the country after dropping off merchandise in Tacna, according to the agency's press release.
The Regional Director of the Arica Customs, Fernando Rousseau Amigo, explained that during the inspection of a cargo vehicle the inspectors found 6 packages that contained a total of 1.876 pills with the name "Misoprostol» on packaging and logos that indicated they were from the Pfizer laboratory. «Each pill is 200 mg. and they were hidden maliciously and without any import documents, which is why it is considered smuggling.«explained the manager.
Rousseau Amigo pointed out that Misoprostol was initially used to treat ulcers and gastrointestinal lesions, but is now used as a method to terminate pregnancy. “All types of medication must be administered and prescribed by a physician, while its importation must also comply with the parameters imposed by the ISP. In this case, no protocol is followed and we do not know what its real content is, which is why we seized them to prevent it from endangering the community.”
The driver was warned and will have to explain the reason for his action in court. "It is very important that the community does not consume or buy medicines acquired illegally, since they put their health at risk," added the Regional Director.
