The dredging of the Uruguay River will bring benefits to the logistics chain made up of producers, exporters, transporters and port operators in Argentina and the eastern country, and will promote river transport and the reduction of freight costs,
This was stated by the president of the Uruguay River Administrative Commission (CARU), Gastón Silbermann, at a meeting held within the framework of the 40th anniversary of the organization formed by Argentina and the neighboring country.
"Dredging and its subsequent assured maintenance will allow the river to be navigated safely by larger vessels, which will contribute to promoting river transport. This will reduce freight costs for the benefit of foreign trade and will encourage nautical, sports and recreational tourism."Silbermann analyzed.
The official explained that “ships will be able to carry almost twice as much as they could, depending on the height of the tide. A ship with a capacity of 30.000 tons, a bulk carrier for example, if it carried 11.000 tons, will now be able to increase that volume to 22.000 tons.” He added: “We hope that dredging will multiply the river transport. We are betting that this will become the Uruguay River waterway”.
The CARU project included dredging to open the border river course and provides for subsequent marking and maintenance between Nueva Palmira (Uruguay) and Fray Bentos (Argentina).
