The next round of trade negotiations to end the trade war between China and the United States will take place in Beijing on next March 28th and 29th, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Thursday (21.3.2019).
The spokesman for the department, Gao Feng, confirmed at a press conference on Thursday (21.3.2019) that Chinese Vice Premier Liu He will lead the Chinese delegation during the negotiations.
Liu will then travel to Washington for the next round of talks, which will be held in the US capital in early April., the spokesman added.
The US delegation will be headed by Robert Lighthizer, the US Trade Representative, who has been accompanied on other occasions by the Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin.
Negotiations to resolve the trade dispute between the two countries continue after the extension of the original 90-day period - which ended on March 1 - established in the truce signed on December 1, 2018 by US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
At the end of February, Trump announced that the US was delaying the planned increase in tariffs on Chinese products in light of the “progress” achieved during the latest round of trade negotiations held in Washington.
The president then insisted that he would meet with Xi "in the not-too-distant future" to fine-tune the details of a possible agreement.
Trump agreed with the official Chinese news agency Xinhua that the negotiations had made “substantial progress.”
According to the US president, that round was “very productive” and progress was made on key issues such as “protection of intellectual property, (forced) transfer of technology, agriculture, services, currencies and many other issues.”
The trade war between the world's two largest economies, triggered by the US president's aggressive protectionism, has generated concern and volatility in international financial markets.
Both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB) have lowered their global economic growth forecasts as a result of trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
