Central America: Exports increase 28% in the third quarter of 2021

The resurgence of global economic activity in 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, led Central America to achieve positive trade results.

The total amount of exports during the third quarter amounted to approximately USD 31,402.5 million, representing an increase of 28 % compared to 2020.

The data is collected in the latest update of the "Central American Trade Monitor", prepared by the Center for Economic Integration Studies (CEIE) of the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA), a specialized agency of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

At the country level, the relative importance of Guatemala's exports stands out with 35.6% of the total exported to the region, followed by El Salvador with 25% and Costa Rica, 21%; in addition to Honduras (10,8%), Nicaragua (6,3%) and Panama (0,7%).

Intraregional exports accounted for 28,3% of total exports, representing a growth of 27,7% compared to 2020, while exports to countries outside Central America showed a growth of 28,1%.

On the other hand, exports that registered greater dynamism compared to 2020 are those destined for China, with 184,8%, Japan with 61,8%, South Korea with 45,7% and Mexico with 44,6%; in addition to exports to the Dominican Republic (26.9%), the European Union (24.4%) and the United States (22.5%).

With this increase, the report says, “Central American exports showed strong resilience.”

As for the main products that led export flows outside the region, according to the report, there are: medical, surgical, dental or veterinary instruments, coffee, bananas and plantains, copper minerals and their concentrates, and to a lesser extent sugar, and dates, figs, pineapples, avocados, guavas, mangoes and mangosteens.

Imports

In the case of total imports of goods, these amounted to USD 63,404.9 million in the third quarter of 2021, showing an increase of 41% compared to the same period in 2020.

 Regarding extra-regional imports, which account for 84.82% of the total imported, they registered an interannual growth of 44%; while intra-regional imports reported an interannual variation of 28.9%.

For this third quarter of 2021, extra-regional imports represented 84,82% of the total imported, and show an increase of 44% compared to the previous year. While imports from within the region represented a year-on-year variation of 28.9%.

Extra-regional imports by trading partner show for the period under study that the main suppliers of the region are the United States with a weight of 38%, China with 16,64%, the European Union with 10,7% and Mexico with 9,4%; which presented an interannual growth of 42.7%, 51.9%, 57.1% and 30.8%, respectively.
