Bolivia seeks Mercosur support for declaration to facilitate trade through the waterway

-

The Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Benjamín Blanco, reported on Tuesday (16.07.2019), in Santa Fe, Argentina, that Bolivia will propose to the member countries of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) the approval of a declaration to facilitate trade through the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.

"We have a proposal from Bolivia to present, in the corresponding forum, a declaration to be able to work on facilitating trade in the waterway, given that the waterway is the natural exit for Bolivia towards the Atlantic (Ocean)," he said in statements to the state channel Bolivia TV.

Blanco expressed his confidence that the member countries of Mercosur (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay) can support this initiative.

"(This statement) is to be able to eliminate the obstacles that we have at this moment in traffic. "so that all countries can work based on the standards," explained the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade.

In October 2018, Bolivia established, for the first time in its 193-year history, a private port complex located at the head of the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway, which represents its sovereign access to the Atlantic Ocean.

On the other hand, he confirmed the participation of President Evo Morales in the meeting of heads of state of that bloc, in which Bolivia is still an associated state.

He also did not rule out Morales holding bilateral meetings with his Mercosur counterparts.
