The Governments of Argentina and the United States signed the update of the Work plan for the export of national fruits to the North American market, which includes blueberries, cherries, pears, apples, peaches and nectarines, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and International Affairs and Worship reported on Wednesday (30.11.2022/XNUMX/XNUMX).
Such a plan facilitates safe trade by incorporating changes that benefit local producers and exporters, and strengthens the capacity to safeguard agriculture and natural resources from external pests, according to official information.

The event was attended by the Secretary of International Economic Relations of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Cecilia Todesca Bocco; the United States Ambassador to Argentina, Marc Stanley; the head of SENASA, Diana Guillén; authorities from the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA – APHIS) and national fruit producers grouped in COPEXEU.
In that framework, The first shipment of blueberries and cherries was made of the Argentine season destined for the North American market after carrying out a joint inspection.

"This achievement is part of a solid and strategic commercial relationship, always with the possibility of expansion and diversification. It is also worth remembering that the United States is the first foreign direct investor in our country," the statement said.
Features of Argentine production
- Argentina is located among the top ten blueberry producers worldwide. Currently produces more than 17.500 tons of blueberries per year.
- In 2021, The United States was the main destination with an estimated share of around 60% of the total exported in terms of quantities.
- El Blueberry is produced in the off-season compared to the main world producers, which gives it a competitive advantage. Most of the harvest begins in mid-September and extends until mid-December, a time when the Northern Hemisphere lacks fresh fruit because its harvest has finished two months earlier.
- The fruit is considered within the group of fine fruits or berries, with a high antioxidant content and appreciated for their nutraceutical properties.
- Cultivation is a important product for regional economies from Argentina and shows a notable expansion, especially in the province of Entre Ríos, the main exporter of the fruit, as well as in Tucumán, Buenos Aires, Corrientes, Santa Fe, Salta, Catamarca, San Luis and Córdoba.
- As regards Fresh cherries, during 2021, USD 24,6 million were exported to 26 destinations, among which the United States and China stand out. So far in 2022, exports amount to USD 7,8 million (73% higher than in January-October of the previous year). Today, 34% of exports in value correspond to the United States, representing 49% of our cherry exports in terms of quantities.
