Argentina and Russia will have consulates in Russia for the 2018 World Cup

Argentina's Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie said at a press conference on Thursday (7.6.2018) that the country will open a consulate with Brazil in St. Petersburg (Russia) during the International Federation of Association Football World Cup, which begins on June 14.

"One of our most important tasks as a Foreign Ministry, beyond those that are usually known, is consular assistance, that is, taking care of everything that an Argentine needs abroad," said Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie at a press conference together with the Brazilian ambassador to Argentina, Sérgio França Danese, and the Russian ambassador, Viktor Koronelli, when presenting the Foreign Ministry's extensive operation to assist Argentines traveling to Russia for the World Cup.

“To process documents, grant powers, help and guide our compatriots wherever they may be, whether they are living or travelling, in an emergency or health situation, and for all the procedures that are part of daily life but are of special significance: consuls are there for all of this, that is their job,” explained the Chancellor.

In this regard and in the framework of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Faurie announced that, In an unprecedented task for a sporting event, Argentina and Brazil have decided to establish a Joint Traveling Consulate in the city of St. Petersburg for the entire month of the major event, to serve and assist citizens of both countries.

The Office will be located in the city centre, at the Novotel Saint Petersburg Centre. This city was chosen because our national team and Brazil will play matches there during the first qualifying round and it will be the venue for the semi-finals. Argentina will also establish consular offices in the cities where the national team will play, only for the day of the matches (Nizhny Novgorod and possibly Kazan).

Accompanied by the Director of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Luis María Sobrón, Faurie stressed that this bilateral initiative crystallizes the “historical ties of brotherhood and shared work that we have with Brazil,” and highlighted “the great participation that supporters and fans of our respective teams will have in Russia.”

This initiative is possible thanks to the agreement signed in 2017 by the Presidents of Argentina and Brazil on consular cooperation and policies for communities of compatriots abroad, and is part of a policy aimed at rationalization and efficiency in the use of state resources, a principle shared by both nations.

It is also worth remembering that the Argentine Foreign Ministry has created a website with information and recommendations for travelers. These are very useful recommendations for travelers to take into account for the World Cup, either before the trip or during their stay in Russia.

In addition, mobile phone operators have agreed with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to implement a system that allows Argentine tourists abroad to know the address and emergency telephone number of the Argentine consulate closest to their location via text message. This system is already operational.
