Argentina has been appointed to form part of the Council of the International Maritime Organization, which defines the regulations on maritime transport and regulates search and rescue activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement on Friday (29.11.2019).
«The Argentine Republic has been elected today in London to join the Council of the International Maritime Organization.» This election «constitutes a recognition by the international community of Argentina's work in that organization and its contribution to the safety of navigation and the preservation of the marine environment", the Foreign Ministry said.
For the Argentine Government, the work of the International Maritime Organization "is of decisive importance. There, the rules on maritime transport, essential for Argentine foreign trade, are discussed and formulated, such as -for example- control tasks, which within the framework of the exercise of its jurisdiction as Port State Control are carried out on foreign vessels arriving at Argentine ports."
The IMO is where decisions are made on the regulation of maritime assistance and rescue (SAR) activities, which are of fundamental importance to Argentina, whose area of responsibility extends to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in an area of approximately 14 million square kilometers, to which are added the areas adjacent to Antarctica that are monitored in cooperation with Chile, among many other activities developed by the Argentine Maritime Administration through its competent agencies as a whole.
Argentina expressed its gratitude for the support of those who supported its inclusion in the Council of the International Maritime Organization and stressed its commitment "to contribute to the safety of navigation and the environmental sustainability of activities carried out at sea."
