Argentina eliminates the Advance Information System for Imports and facilitates foreign trade

-

The Customs Collection and Control Agency and the Secretariat of Industry and Commerce of the Ministry of Economy have issued the Joint General Resolution No. 5651/2025, which repeals the Statistical Import System (SEDI). This cancellation will come into effect on February 26, 2025, one day after its publication in the Official Gazette.

The new regulations revokes Joint General Resolution No. 5.429, issued on October 9, 2023, and Joint General Resolution No. 5.466, of December 22, 2023, together with its amendments. As a result, the SEDI will cease to exist, and all declarations previously registered under this system will be considered null and void as of the entry into force of the resolution.

This change is part of the guidelines established by the World Trade Organization (WTO).In this regard, the law highlights Law No. 24.425, sanctioned on December 7, 1994 and promulgated on December 23 of the same year, which approved the Final Act of the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations and gave rise to the WTO. In this context, the Agreement on Import Licensing Procedures becomes relevant, which establishes that such systems should not be used to restrict trade.

The WTO stresses that technical regulations and assessment procedures must not create unnecessary obstacles to international trade. Ensuring that import operations are carried out in a simple and transparent manner is therefore a priority in order to comply with international standards and facilitate foreign trade.

With this resolution of the National Government, Argentina updates its regulatory framework and promotes a more agile environment for imports, aligning itself with the principles of free trade and strengthening its competitiveness in the global market.
