On a day like today, but 208 years ago, a group of Argentine leaders overthrew Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros and imposed the First Government Junta in the Viceroyalty of the Río de La Plata.
The events of the May Revolution took place during the course of the so-called May Week, between May 18, the date of the official confirmation of the fall of the Supreme Central Board, and 2May 5, date of assumption of the First Board.
The members of the First Board were Cornelio Saavedra as president; Mariano Moreno and Juan José Paso as secretaries and Manuel Alberti Miguel de Azcuénaga, Manuel Belgrano, Juan José Castelli, Juan Larrea and Domingo Matheu as members.
The declaration of independence took place six years later during the Congress of Tucumán on July 9, 1816.
