Uruguay and Brazil implement tariff exemption for products from free trade zones

-

The governments of Uruguay and Brazil delivered this Tuesday (04,10.2022) to the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi) the Protocols for the total elimination of the common external tariff on goods produced in the free trade zones of the other country.

The agreements, which include a Health protocol on the importation of yerba mate, represent a "milestone" in the relationship between Uruguay and Brazil, said the Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo, at a special event at the headquarters of Aladi, in Montevideo.

The declaration states that both countries have completed the process of incorporating the protocols into their respective legal systems, so The one referring to yerba mate came into force yesterday and the one on free zones came into force on October 10.

Bustillo said that the agreement on free trade zones is "very important" because it gives Uruguay the possibility of placing the production of free trade zones in the neighboring country without tariffs.

"It will have a great impact on quality work," the official stressed.

"This is very good news. It allows for the possibility of all goods produced in free zones entering the Brazilian market automatically at zero," he stressed.

In this way, and with this permanent agreement, an agreement that allowed tax relief only for two Uruguayan free zones and that had to be renewed year after year is left behind.

Also participating in the ceremony were the Secretary General of Aladi, Sergio Abreu, and the Permanent Representative of Brazil to Aladi and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), Antonio Simoes.
