Uruguay will soon reestablish tourist connectivity with Europe

-

Tourism Minister Germán Cardoso believes that the Government's successful handling of the COVID-19 pandemic contributes to the international perception of Uruguay as a safe destination. This strength explains Europe's opening to our country, the reestablishment of international flights and the interest of new airlines. "Uruguay will act on the same terms with that continent," he said.

“In the coming weeks, tourism connectivity with Europe will be reestablished on the same terms as this continent has done with us,” Cardoso said in an interview with Comunicación Presidencial. The Minister of Tourism was referring to the recommendation made in June by the European Union to its member and associate countries to open their borders to a list of 15 countries, including Uruguay.

“It is not less than with the the only Latin American country with which the European Union has decided to reestablish air connectivity "It was Uruguay," he stressed. This meant that the airline Iberia connects Montevideo with Madrid with three weekly flights and Air Europa does so with one weekly flight.

Furthermore, Amazonas Uruguay It offers a weekly connection with Sao Paulo and Latam, one flight per week to that city in Brazil and another to Santiago de Chile.

Cardoso recalled that the airline American Airlines The airline announced the reestablishment of its commercial flights and, starting November 5, will connect Montevideo and Miami with two weekly flights, with a new model of aircraft: a Boeing 777.200 for 273 passengers. In addition, it reported that there were inquiries from airlines that, prior to the pandemic, did not fly to Uruguay and are now studying the possibility of including it in their flight network.

“The country's appreciation for the government's handling of the pandemic and its excellent results has made us seen in the rest of the world as a serious country that arouses international interest and attention,” he analyzed.

He added that this approach has put Uruguay “under observation by companies and businesses in the region and elsewhere, so there is fertile ground, as long as we can continue to move forward.”

In a post-pandemic scenario, Uruguay is emerging as a “safe destination” in terms of tourism, and this achievement can be a differentiating aspect in the region. The assessment will be a “strength” in the times to come, he said.

The minister said he perceived a cultural change in the world's tourism trends, with a revaluation of the environment and natural resources, since Uruguay offers a very varied offer, in addition to the traditional sun and beach destination.

On Thursday 10th, during the opening of the ministry's stand at Expo Prado, Cardoso said at a press conference: "We are preparing for the day of reopening and we are aware that the situation is compromised in Argentina and Brazil, which are our main clients in this area."

However, he reported that the ministry is working in coordination with Public Health and the Honorary Scientific Advisory Group and has provided proposals in an attempt to reach the summer season “gradually in health corridors” and enable the entry of tourists from both countries with health measures that include analysis and quarantine.
