Uruguay's Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa said the restrictions imposed by Brazil on Uruguayan dairy products on October 10 are not good for either country.
The measure "is not good for Brazil, Uruguay or Mercosur," the minister told local radio Carve, noting that it was a "bad signal" in the context of negotiations with the European Union (EU) for a free trade agreement.
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture made official on Tuesday (10.10.2017) a ban on dairy products from Uruguay, arguing that Montevideo does not send its own products, but is triangulating imports.
For the Uruguayan chancellor this "It is a very far-fetched (unsupported) argument from the lobby" of the Brazilian dairy sector, and explained that "it is impossible to make a triangulation" of these characteristics.
Nin noted that his colleague Aloysio Nunes told him that he was not aware of this resolution, so it is expected that it will not be applied immediately.
For Uruguay, this must be "handled with great care", especially given the negotiations being carried out with the European bloc.
Negotiations between the EU and Mercosur are continuing, now awaiting an improvement in the European offer of a quota for imports of South American meat products.
Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) requested a quota of 350.000 tonnes, initially tolerating at least 78.000, but the offer from Brussels that emerged this week barely reaches 70.000, which complicated these negotiations, which began more than 20 years ago.
