Uruguay seeks to position Montevideo as a green and intelligent port

In the framework of the 102nd anniversary of the National Port Administration (ANP), its head, Alberto Díaz, highlighted the work to distinguish the Montevideo terminal as a green and intelligent port.

In a press conference, the official said, "There are key issues for this administration, "such as the improvement of the times for the authorization of port operators. The required permits constitute complicated bureaucratic aspects, which is why we are promoting a change before the Executive Branch so that, by decree, these aspects are normalized."

Green and smart port

He reported that at the meeting of the Port Coordinator, the will of the authorities of the organization to transform Montevideo into a green port was discussed. (green port). This designation refers to the premises that carry out their activities in a sustainable manner and provide measures of improvement and control of air, water, noise and waste quality.

“We have already begun working to obtain certification that recognises us as a green port. This commits us to comply with certain environmental regulations by 2020,” said Díaz. 

“We seek to become a smart port (smart port), which requires us to incorporate more technology into all activities and procedures," he added. Deepening of the channel 

In addition, at that meeting there was also discussion regarding the authorization of the River Plate Management Commission (CARP) to dredge 14 depth meters the access channel to the port of Montevideo, in order to allow the entry of vessels with greater draft.

The deepening of the canal and its extension to kilometer 54 were announced on June 4 by the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Víctor Rossi, at the end of the Council of Ministers in the Executive Tower, in Montevideo. The matter is even referred to in the Master Plan 2018-2035, which is coordinated by the ANP.
