European Union launches new legal action against the United Kingdom

-

The European Commission launched four new legal proceedings against the United Kingdom on Friday (22.07.2022) for non-compliance with the customs provisions imposed after Brexit for Northern Ireland. These processes began on June 15, 2022, says a statement.

In total the European executive has launched seven such proceedings against London over the Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland, a source of tension between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

«This compliance is essential for Northern Ireland to continue to benefit from its privileged access to the European Single Market."and is necessary to protect the health and safety of EU citizens and the integrity of the Single Market," the European Commission said in a statement.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland ceased to be a member state of the European Union and became a third state on 31 January 2020, but Northern Ireland remains aligned with a limited set of Single Market rules.European Commission statement)
