Customs Union in Central America: Honduras and El Salvador begin operations at the El Amatillo Integrated Border Post

Perfecting the Deep Integration process in Central America. The authorities of El Salvador and Honduras announced on Wednesday (06.12.2023) the start of operations in the Integrated Border Post (PFI) The Amatillo; treatment that has received support from SIECA.

It should be noted that El Amatillo not only benefits El Salvador and Honduras, but also serves as a hub for trade between Mexico and Guatemala. According to official data, 33% of foreign trade operations on a regional scale are carried out here alone.

On the measure, Francisco Lima Mena, Secretary General of SIECA He said: “I think it is important to recognize the will of the countries, for the implementation of the El Amatillo border post, which from today December 7 from 2023, will become an INTEGRATED BORDER POST.” He explained that in this infrastructure, the authorities of El Salvador and Honduras, “will provide their services in the same facility, which undoubtedly means progress, especially due to the tangible benefits in terms of trade facilitation…”

This ambitious project represents a significant step towards simplification and streamlining border operations. From now on, the authorities of El Salvador and Honduras will work together to facilitate trade and enhance coordination between the States Parties to the Deep Integration process.
