The countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Andean Community (CAN), communicated this Wednesday (08.11.2022) the interest in Strengthen institutional coordination spaces between both integration schemes.
This was addressed in the joint document released at the end of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers, which is taking place in the city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Dominican Republic).
SICA and CAN renewed their commitment to the consolidation of democracy and respect for human rights, as well as the exercise of the rule of law and respect for political institutions as an essential element for the promotion of economic and social development, respecting the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.
They also expressed their concern about the impacts derived from the climate change which pose a threat to life, the ecosystem and our livelihoods, especially in the Small Island Developing States of the region, the landlocked countries.
The CAN expressed its solidarity with the peoples of SICA due to the consequences of hurricane Julia, Fiona, Lisa and other climatic events that affected the region in recent weeks, as well as expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. Also, both entities called on the international community to recognize their countries as vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change and, in this way, mobilize resources to contribute to the reconstruction and resilience of the region in the face of these incidents.
Among other issues, they recognized the urgency of adopting coordinated actions at the international and regional level on issues of health, expressed concern about the adverse impact that international crises have on the supply chains of food products and stressed the urgency of addressing the dynamics of migration.
The two blocks recognized the interest in articulating a single regional voice and act as a block at the multilateral level on agreed issues, establishing a fruitful dialogue with other regional and political blocks, which allows us to seek comprehensive solutions to the impacts arising from the global context in our countries, especially between countries.
At the closing of the document, SICA and CAN reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against terrorism and organized crime, in all its forms and manifestations, promoting coordinated actions of police cooperation and intelligence.
Currently, SICA is made up of Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic, while CAN is made up of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.Joint statement from SICA and CAN)
