A workshop on the WCO data model was held in the Americas and Caribbean region

The Workshop on World Customs Organization Data Model (OMA) took place on Wednesday (05.10.2022) in the Americas and the Caribbean region. The activity was attended by 19 customs representatives.

The event was organized by the WCO Regional Office for Capacity Building, with the support of the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency for the Americas and the Caribbean, and the United States Customs and Border Protection.

In his opening remarks, Marilú Llerena, Regional Vice President of the WCO for the Americas and the Caribbean He said that “the WCO Data Model is a major effort by customs to simplify the data required in customs declarations in order to harmonize them, make them comparable and compatible with the Single Window project.” He added that the instrument helps customs to exchange information using a common and universal language.

WCO facilitators thus stressed the importance of standardising data requirements to reduce trade costs and simplify customs processes.

The workshop included a guest speaker exchange session such as Customs of Chile, Ministry of Finance of Costa Rica, Federal Revenue of Brazil and Customs of Uruguay who provided a perspective on the implementation of the WCO Data Model at the national level in the Single Window.

The activity thus provided customs with capacity building on a common standard for regulatory data exchange and networking in border management.
