Customs agents received training in the use of an application to better protect cultural heritage

-

In order to improve the training of Customs and Police agents in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural goods, the World Customs Organization (WCO) and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) conducted training on the use of the “ID-Art” application, intended to identify stolen works of art.

The activities on the “ID-Art” tool, which works in English, French and Spanish, took place on October 20 and 21. On this occasion, almost XNUMX people participated 300 customs officers from more than 50 countries, according to the statement.

The new app allows instant access to INTERPOL's stolen art database, which contains more than 52.000 objects reported stolen and still missing from 134 member countries.

ID-Art is available for free on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and some of its features are accessible offline. Searches of the database via the app can be performed by taking or uploading a photo, or by entering search criteria manually.

Furthermore, The application provides the possibility of recording the geographic location in cases where officers want to examine information about looting or destruction discovered during field checks. Another important functionality of the application allows officers to examine information about the detained object according to the international standard “Object-ID”, which can serve as a critical piece of evidence for identifying cultural objects in cooperation with other government agencies.

According to official information, ID-Art is another important innovation added to the WCO's ARCHEO communication platform, a tool for the exchange of information and to assist in the identification and verification of cultural objects. The new application will be used to improve the capabilities of customs officers in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural objects.

It should be noted that the activity is part of the cooperation agreements reached by the Secretary General of the WCO, Kunio Mikuriya, and his counterpart from INTERPOL, Jurgen Stock, which were carried out at the same time as the first G20 Culture Ministerial was convened at the end of July 2021 in Rome, Italy.
