Panama strengthens ties with Brazil as part of its rapprochement with MERCOSUR

-

A South American trade mission, made up of more than 20 businessmen and supported by the embassies of the MERCOSUR member countries, will soon visit Panama with the aim of promoting the country's competitive advantages as logistics, financial and international services hub, reported the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI).

The announcement was made this Monday (August 18.08.2025, XNUMX) during a meeting held by Panamanian Minister of Commerce and Industry Julio Moltó, along with Vice Minister of Foreign Trade Astrid Ábrego, and the president of the Brazil-Panama Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Janaina Tobia Quisinski. According to the official statement, the meeting is part of the international efforts Panama is undertaking to consolidate its integration into the regional bloc and encourage the attraction of private investment.

Panama and its rapprochement with MERCOSUR

MERCOSUR, founded in 1991 by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recently granted Brazil the Pro Tempore Presidency following Argentina's transfer of the presidency at the 2024th Summit of Presidents. In December XNUMX, Panama achieved Associate State status, beginning a phase of international strategic preparation in which Brazil plays a key role.

"Since Panama joined the bloc, there has been growing interest from Brazilian companies in investing in our country, taking advantage of the extensive network of trade agreements that offer preferential access to more than 60 countries, including the United States, with which Brazil does not have a trade agreement," said Minister Moltó.

The statement also highlighted that "the Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA) with the United States represents a significant advantage for Brazilian companies establishing themselves in Panama, allowing them to export to the U.S. market with tariff benefits."

Along the same lines, he added that "companies can take advantage of Panama's logistics platform—which includes the Canal, ports, airport, and the Colón Free Zone—to expand exports, diversify markets, and reduce transportation and storage costs."

Panama and Brazil celebrate 99 years of diplomatic relations this year, and both sides agreed on the importance of continuing to strengthen economic and trade ties within the framework of the association with MERCOSUR, according to official sources.
