La  2022 edition of the Study Report “Disruptive Technologiess» is based on the document published in 2019, and is the result of the joint work of both organizations, in close collaboration with customs administrations, representatives of the private sector and other stakeholders.

The revamped publication aims to promote awareness and knowledge on the use of disruptive technologies in international trade, particularly in the border management environment, by highlighting the benefits and opportunities, as well as the challenges and gaps identified.

The document is also intended to serve as a source. important information for Customs actions regarding the paperless trade agenda and the implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement.

It is worth recalling that the collaboration between the WCO and the WTO on work on disruptive technologies started in early 2021 and included the collection of survey results related to the use of these disruptive technologies by customs and the document entitled “The role of advanced technologies in cross-border trade: a customs perspective”. In addition, the WCO organized two technology conferences and several regional workshops on disruptive technologies during 2020, 2021 and 2022.

With this in mind, the 2022 version incorporates such lessons learned and the findings collected over the course of the last three years, presenting 42 case studies provided by customs, the private sector, international organizations and other stakeholders.
