The World Customs Organization (WCO) launched a regional workshop on disruptive technologies for American customs on Thursday (25.11.2021). The seminar is being held on an online platform with the participation of the Korean Customs Service, according to the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency for the Americas and the Caribbean.
The seminar was opened by the Deputy Secretary General of the WCO, Ricardo Treviño Chapa; the Vice President of the Americas and Caribbean Region, Werner Ovalle; and the Director of the Korean Customs Service, Sung Sig Kim.
In his opening remarks, Ricardo Trevino Chapa He stressed “the importance of developing capabilities and solutions based on the use of Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and the Internet of Things, among others, to improve performance in customs.”
Werner Ovalle In this regard, he pointed out that “in the work plan of the WCO Regional Vice-Presidency for the Americas and the Caribbean, the axis of customs technologies constitutes an important pillar in the digital transformation of the management of our agencies.” Speaking at the opening of the workshop, he emphasized that “it is vital and opportune for members of the region to have projects that involve technology.”
"Learning from experience allows us to learn about best practices in customs administrations," said the Vice President.
The WCO regional workshop on disruptive technologies is thus presented as an opportunity to raise awareness of the possibilities that technological solutions could provide to facilitate and better control the cross-border movement of goods for the benefit of all.
