-

Mercosur Tourism Ministers, meeting in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazú, pledged to work together and permanently in favor of regional tourism growth and development.

The Ministers of Tourism of Paraguay, Sofía Montiel de Afara; of Argentina, José Gustavo Santos; of Brazil; Marcelo Alvaro Antonio; and of Uruguay, Liliam Kechichian, participated in this XXII Mercosur Meeting. Also present were the Vice Minister of Tourism of Bolivia, Marcelo Arze García; and the Director of Sernatur of Chile, Andrea Wolleter Eyheramwndy.

Integrated initiatives

The Secretaries of State expressed their interest in developing integrated river tourism circuits, facilitating the harmonization of tourist navigation between our countries. They also decided to continue working with the corresponding national actors in the planning of an air and river connectivity network that will strengthen our countries, favor investment and new opportunities for links.

The need to consolidate a joint tourism promotion strategy in distant markets was analyzed, which allows the planned actions to be executed and promotes the design of others.

They talked about integration with the countries of the Pacific Alliance, particularly with regard to exchange and technical cooperation related to community-based rural tourism.

Support for coordinated policy formulation at border posts, to facilitate the entry and exit of visitors to the region was another topic discussed by the Ministers of Tourism.

Tourism authorities confirmed their willingness to work in coordination with the Inter-American Development Bank to advance the creation of the “Jesuit Trail in South America”, promoted by Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Bolivia, through the establishment of institutionalization and governance mechanisms, as well as branding, promotion and marketing actions.

“Paraguayan participation was very important in terms of issues such as monitoring the integrated promotion of the Jesuit path and the work of promoting and creating a greater integrated offer such as the yerba mate route and others that we are going to work on between several countries,” stressed the head of Senatur.

F2030 Soccer World Cup

The Mercosur Tourism Ministers ratified their support for the joint candidacy of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay to host the 2030 World Cup, organized by the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), considering the high impact that such an event will have on tourism in our countries and the consequent spillover into the economy of the region.

It should be noted that, according to data provided by the World Tourism Organization, it is estimated that in 2030, international tourism will mobilize a total of 1800 billion tourists worldwide, and the international distribution will change from the current 50/50 to 60/40 in favor of emerging countries.

Taking into account the above, the percentage of participation in the total world travel is not yet significant in South America, which results in high possibilities for its growth, and the historic opportunity to transform, according to the estimates given by the OMT.
